We have the new electronic caterpillar engines in our supply vessel, and we kept getting a derate on the engines. But without a serial cable and laptop (read: expensive), there was no way to accurately diagnose and pinpoint problem components. Here is where we used the Raytek thermometer: we have no aftercooler gauge as the engine was ordered without the fully-loaded gauge panel. By pointing the thermometer to the aftercooler, it was seen to be too hot--190 degrees. It was just a matter of point and shoot after that. These engines have two water regulators. We were able to determine that it was the uppermost regulator, which we replaced. Saved us downtime waiting for a mechanic with his laptop and a rather large invoice.

Wheel bearing and other bearing noises can be tough to figure out--which side of the car is the noise coming from? Just take the problem vehicle for a drive and then quickly check the temperatures of both bearings through the wheel after removing the hubcap. The side that needs repair will normally be 50-80 degrees F, hotter than the normal or okay side. Hope this helps.

While working on a front brake problem, I found a defective caliper while using the Raytek infrared thermometer. It quickly picked up a radical degree difference between the two rebuilt calipers. What a fine tool to make our jobs easier!!!! Thomas Trujillo, Denver, CO
